Continued from page 27 got too threatening. It is no fun and being heartbroken, you have my sympathies. I would write to your friend, explain that you are lonely and either invite him up for a weekend or ask if you can spend the weekend at his place (perhaps you could stay with relatives and visit him). Do not mention your real feelings in the letter. Have a night out with him, and go somewhere not too crowded. When you have been talking for a while, mention that you miss your short-wave chats with him. If he has the same attitude, ask him if he really meant all the things he was saying. He should get the message loud and clear. But don't be too surprised if he denies it. He may not be ready to admit that he is gay. Good luck. Over and out.

Your friend,

INTSANT IQ

BY ЯUTCH

Dear Butch,

Butch

I have started to go out with a very nice man and I like him a lot. Unfortunately he is incredibly bright and cultivated, whilst I am hardly a mental giant. He often tells me I am "limited" and I am starting to feel like a real dummy. He has offered to improve my mind but I am scared he might lose interest when he realises I'm not in his league. How can I build up my IQ quickly?

Mensa

Marrickville

Dear Mensa,

Unfortunately. they don't have Bullworkers for brains. I am always suspicious of people who want to improve me (and there has been dozens!) I suspect your friend is giving you an inferiority complex. I would like to say that if your friend is genuinely fond of you, he would accept you as you are. But I think you're in love, and I don't expect you to listen to reason. So here is the Butch Guide to Instant Intelligence: Buy yourself a copy of 100 Great Books by John Canning. It will tell you everything you need to know to appear literate. Then, one by one, buy the books. Don't read them of course, but open them, spill food on them and leave them in the sun till they have that well-read look. Next purchase

a

copy of Opera Recordings by Ken Harris (everyone associates Opera with intelligence). Learn some of the phrases off by heart. Buy two Verdi operas (Il Trovatore and Aida). Read all the critics of everything in the Herald and, most importantly, learn how to look intelligent. Keep your mouth closed at all times when you are not speaking, develop eyecontact and try to keep the topic of conversation centred on something you know. Subscribe to the Nimrod Theatre Company's season and leave the programs around the house. Finally, see a film with subtitles at least once a month. You don't have to read them to understand what's going on: just listen to the foyer-talk at interval. But remember, you can't acquire culture in a hurry. It's going to take about six weeks before you're covered by a thin but impressive veneer of intelligence. Good luck! Your friend,

Butch
